The officer who pinned George Floyd is in custody. The former police officer who was seen on video using his knee to pin down George Floyd, a black man who later died, has been taken into custody, the authorities announced on Friday, after days of protests escalated overnight with the burning of a Minneapolis police station.
The officer, Derek Chauvin, who is white, was taken into custody by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension on Friday, John Harrington, the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, said at a brief news conference. He said he did not have information about the charges, or about the status of three other officers who were at the scene of Mr. Floyd’s arrest. An announcement by the Hennepin County Attorney is expected at 1 p.m. local time.
The announcement of the arrest came shortly after Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota called for order in the streets of Minneapolis “so we can restore justice,” after a night of escalating chaos in which protesters set fire to a police station, the National Guard was deployed and President Trump threatened violence against protesters angered over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody.

“I refuse to have it take away the attention from the stain that we need to be working on,” he said. “These are things that have been brewing in this country for 400 years.”Mr. Floyd, 46, died after pleading “I can’t breathe” while a white police officer pressed his knee into his neck, in an encounter that was captured on video. His death set off days of protests and scattered looting in Minneapolis, as well as a string of protests across the country as demonstrators also spoke out against other recent killings of black men and women.
Adding fuel to the tensions, President Trump, who previously called the video of Mr. Floyd’s death “shocking,” weighed in with a tweet calling the protesters “thugs” and said that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” The comments prompted Twitter

as the man begged for air, that rage turned to chaos.Outside the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct station house, the crowds surged, with some people tossing fireworks and other items at officers, while the police fired projectiles back. The standoff soon spiraled out of control, with officers retreating from the police station in vehicles just after 10 p.m. Thursday local time as protesters stormed the building — smashing equipment, lighting fires and setting off fireworks,

Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis said at a news conference Friday morning that he had made the call for officers to flee the Third Precinct, saying, “The symbolism of a building cannot outweigh the importance of life.”Mr. Frey, a Democrat, said he understood the anger of the city’s residents but pleaded with people to stop destroying property and looting stores. “It’s not just enough to do the right thing yourself,” he said. “We need to be making sure that all of us are held accountable.”
Mr. Frey also gave a fiery retort to Mr. Trump’s tweets during a news conference Friday morning.“Weakness is refusing to take responsibility for your own actions,” he said. “Weakness is pointing your finger at somebody else during a time of crisis.”“Donald Trump knows nothing about the strength of Minneapolis,” he added.

Other Officers just got Fired for Watching a fellow Officer Murder an American Citizen. The other Officers should be charged with Murder
I like how headlines about protests always mention chaos, fires, thrown bottles and broken windows, but headlines about Chauvin and Floyd don't mention the killing All are same case I am pretty sure that 'pleaded that he couldn't breathe' is not the biggest part of the story. Not enough. He could get probation. Why isn’t this a hate crime?
Pressed his knee Fuk off with headline.. God the media is so toxic. If you’re gonna report it atleast do a better job. He murdered George Floyd. Murdered an UNARMED man. A white cop MURDERED a black UNARMED man. Just a few suggestions on how to improve your reporting. JusticeForGeorgeFlyod
I will scale you through the right process on how to make good wins trading crypto in the stock market with RunorGold 'pressed his knee'?!?!?!? the correct term is 'killed' tyvm while he was killing Floyd the other police let him do it. why they are not charged ! Well, I guess that's an 'improvement' on AP's 'knelt' garbage. Not by much. I suppose it's too difficult to write 'murdered'?
There are cultural wars of misunderstanding and intolerance in camps all over this country and in every burb. We now broadcast several hundred channels of ignorance right into the brainhole of ever American. lies are death. So where was Chauvin when he was arrested? Must have been hiding. Can exhale a little bit. But sadly we can't fully exhale yet!
And getting kid-glove treatment, no doubt. America wants justice and equity. We want all of the officers present that did not protect nor preserve the victims life. Accessories to unjustifiable homicide by a law enforcement officer(s). And with that I hope the riots and looting can end. I stand with the black men who protect their business and neighbourhoods. RIP George Floyd ✝️
Charges should be first degree murder. Nothing less Fixed it for you guys. Let me know if you need anything else Ok. I’m going back out on the ledge! I thought “knelt” was a preposterous euphemism, but “pressed his knee”? They considered several possibilities and thought this was perfect? I bet this is an attempt to keep it 'objective' and not pass judgement (which makes it ao much worse). 'killed' or 'murdered' sounds like a moral judgement, so let's just describe the actions and let the white supremacists interpret them as they wish--'doing his job,' 'selfdef.'
Must show the mug shot You spelled “murdered” wrong I fixed your headline: “ Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd, has finally been taken into custody. We are awaiting to hear the charges placed upon the police officer who senselessly murdered George Floyd.” Rot. In. Jail.

The use of 'pressed his knee' is shameful & suggests the NYTimes doesn't take the murder & death of black citizens seriously enough to even ADMIT IT HAPPENED. What the hell is wrong with you, NYTimes? This is shameful.
MURDERED It's called MURDER! “Pressed his knee”? WTF?! I fixed it while I'm not suggesting all cops are bad or even the majority of their is a major problem with police abuse in this country. oh, so after derek chauvin removed his knee, mr. floyd was fine? cool Every time I think I can't be more disappointed in you. If you want to hem and haw, at least say 'allegedly responsible for killing George Floyd.' You can cover your ass while not being despicable. 'pressed his knee into George Floyd’s neck while Floyd pleaded that he couldn’t breathe'? Don't you mean murdered a man on camera?!
that’s a lot of words to avoid saying killed Please say murdered. As the press you have a responsibility to accurately report what is happening, and what happened was murder. What about the police chief who ignored so many previous complaints? Why is he still in his job? And what about the Mayor who hired this police chief? And lost control of the city to looters? Why hasn’t he been removed from office?
And the other 3? All four of them need to be arrested AND charged! He deserves death He killed him. He didn’t “press his knee on him.” He put his knee on his neck until he couldn’t breath, and killed him. He killed him. Fix your tweet. So now can we stop the fucking looting and rioting? Where! George Floyd Minnesota protest updates: Governor activates National GuardThe police officer seen in a video with his knee on George Floyd 's neck was involved in 18 complaints prior to being fired, according to records released by the city. Just out of perspective, because I don’t know, how many complaints does an average police officer receive each year? 18 complaints? 18 opportunities to save George Floyd's life. 18 is a lot of complaints. The person who dealt with these complaints needs to explain why the 19th ended in murder.

Your just wasting time to fraudulently placate & blow smoke up the Minneapolis community. Trump & Barr ordered you to bury it!
