South Africa's energy minister released a proposed roadmap for the future of electricity in the country. However, the plan's costing estimates and reliance on gas-fired power stations have faced criticism.

In 2023, South Africa faced a crisis as ageing coal plants became prone to breakdowns. The country urgently needs new electricity generation facilities and to reduce reliance on coal power. In the first week of 2024, the energy minister released a proposed roadmap for the future of electricity in South Africa . However, the plan's costing estimates are not credible and it ignores the most inexpensive combination of new electricity generation.

The plan also suggests building new gas-fired power stations, which has been criticized by environmental groups. Additionally, importing gas would leave South Africa vulnerable to international price fluctuations
