Kids in Queensland are being held in the Watchhouse for weeks, which is supposed to be a temporary holding place for adults. A psychologist raises concerns about the abhorrent conditions and calls it child abuse.

They’re supposed to be a temporary holding place for adults until the justice system takes over but in Queensland , kids can spend weeks here. ANDREA BATES, PSYCHOLOGIST: I just don’t understand why those abhorrent conditions are not acceptable in the community but somehow, they're accepted and it seemed to be acceptable by the government because at the end of the day, it’s child abuse .

PETER MCCUTCHEON: Andrea Bates is an experienced clinical psychologist, who’s been working for more than three years with mostly Indigenous juveniles at risk being held in the Cairns Watchhouse.ANDREA BATES: Well, they're designed primarily for like an acute stay where you are transitioning someone from court to a detention centre and the idea is essentially you would only have someone in that space for a 48 hour period. PETER MCCUTCHEON: Last week, she sent an open letter to state government ministers and executives about the conditions some juveniles as young as 13 are being held in for up to 20 days.ANDREA BATES: Four to a cell, no privacy from each other in terms of their personal hygien
