Departmental heads will have their performance tracked and face dismissal if not satisfactory, under a revamp following the robo-debt royal commission.

New rules to investigate and sack underperforming federal departmental secretaries are on the way after the failings identified in the robo-debt royal commission.

Under the new rules, it will be mandatory for secretarial roles to be merit-based appointments. This comes after allegations that secretarial appointments had been. Secretarial appointments are for five years. All recent appointments have been merit-based.
