Will children need COVID-19 booster shots? It’s too soon to tell

for adults, advising everyone over 18 to get a booster six months after their second Pfizer or Moderna shot or two months after their Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

“It’s clear to anybody who understands this that having vaccination is a great methodology to prime and prevent serious infection,” Li said. “We know that for every variant that’s come out that’s been the case. And I would be shocked if that’s not the case for the omicron variant.”last month, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, said it is possible that children ages 12 to 15 will need a booster shot, but he suggested it may not be necessary.

Hotez added that it’s not necessarily better to shorten the time window between a person’s booster shot and their initial vaccine. Getting a booster too quickly, he said, may not result in as much of a boost. That said, scientists are still trying to determine how dangerous the omicron variant is and what role booster shots could play in protecting people from it.
