Broadwick Street is where the de facto influencers of Soho, London, linger. They congregate in the zone between the flagships of End, Percival, Axel Arigato and Aimé Leon Dore in tight, formidable cliques. It's the latter that lures in the majority. Amongst their baseball cap, beanie and toque-covered heads, another style has emerged: the painters hat.
As the name suggests, decades before it was bedecked with checkerboard patterns and cartoon characters, the painters hat was a component of a work uniform. “It can be traced back to the 19th Century where it was primarily worn by labourers, especially painters and artists,” says James Eaton, head of design accessories at Puma Sportstyle. With ties to both 1980s fashion and utilitarian apparel, it's no wonder that the hat seamlessly integrates into the Aimé Leon Dore aesthetic.
