A Sydney restaurant manager has told a NSW corruption inquiry that he agreed to lie about donating $10,000 to the Labor Party because his boss's family was "very powerful" and he was "afraid" they could hurt his career prospects.
He said he was "afraid" to say no because working in restaurants is "the only thing I know, and the family is very powerful within the industry".Mr Yee, the general manager of the restaurant, was active in the NSW Labor Party and had previouslyto run as the party's candidate for Sydney lord mayor. He would later run unsuccessfully as a Labor candidate in 2016 for the City of Sydney council.
Mr Huang was then a director and chairman of property development company Yuhu Group, and was banned from making political donations as a "close associate" of a property developer. Developers have been banned from making political donations in NSW since late 2009 under laws introduced by the Rees Labor government.
Mr Mo told the ICAC on Tuesday that he had to draw on his home loan to make a $900 donation by cheque in March 2015, shortly before the Chinese Friends of Labor fundraising dinner.
