Parliamentary privilege was used to reveal the names of high-ranking public servants subject to potential misconduct allegations by the commission of inquiry. It's time for the government to clarify what it knows, writes Adam Langenberg.

Tasmanians had hoped the sexual abuse commission of inquiry would help clean up the culture inside state government institutions and departments, and help to stop child sexual abuse from occurring. The release of the 3,500-page report is a turning point in the long road for justice for the many victim-survivors who have come forward to tell their stories of abuse.

The commission said its ability to make findings of misconduct was constrained by legislation, making it "difficult and in some cases, impossible for us to make some of the findings we might otherwise have made". Eight government departments, entities and statutory bodies also provided procedural fairness responses, including Tasmania Police, the Teachers Registration Board, the Health Department and the Department for Education, Children and Young People.

"What that clearly means is that significant clouds — rightly or wrongly — remain over those eight entities, and 22 individuals."Given how crucial a role the departments and people Ms Webb named will play in implementing and overseeing the commission of inquiry response, a failure to confirm whether they received misconduct notices could undermine community confidence in the government's ability to bring about meaningful change.
