Following a federal court’s decision to overturn the original decision to cancel Djokovic’s visa, the government indicated it would consider using ministerial discretion to deport the Serbian tennis star.
“In making this decision, I carefully considered information provided to me by the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Border Force and Mr Djokovic,” the Immigration Minister said. A decision from the government was expected on Thursday after a statement from a spokesman for Mr Hawke on Wednesday said the Minister was assessing additional evidence provided by Djokovic’s team.
Djokovic sought a medical exemption to enter Australia unvaccinated on the basis that he had already tested positive for COVID-19, but he had his visa cancelled upon touching down in Melbourne last week.
