A Bureau of Meteorology scientist was fired after he was caught secretly working overseas for weeks. The scientist's claim of unfair dismissal was rejected by the Fair Work Commission.

A Bureau of Meteorology scientist was fired after he was caught secretly working overseas for weeks, the Fair Work Commission has been told. Research scientist Diandong Ren took the matter to the commission, claiming he had been unfairly dismissed by the bureau. However, this was quashed by the commission this month when it held up the bureau’s decision to terminate Ren’s role.

The bureau said Ren, who began working for the weather forecaster in 2018, lied to his bosses about where he was working from, in a “deliberate, evasive and untruthful” move that put the Commonwealth’s IT network at risk. The scientist went on holiday for four weeks from August to September 2022 and travelled to the US. When the time came to head back to work at the bureau, Ren never appeared. Instead, almost two weeks went by, and his boss realised Ren was not coming into the office in Melbourne, was missing meetings and was not online during work hour
