In a one-sentence statement, Iditarod said, “The Iditarod Trail Committee Board convened a special meeting on February 22, 2024, where the Board unanimously voted, pursuant to Rule 53, to disqualify Brent Sass from competing in the 2024 Iditarod.”
In a letter obtained by Alaska’s News Source dated Nov. 2, 2023, Planned Parenthood Alaska’s state director wrote to Kuskokwim 300 board members with allegations of sexual assault by Sass, encouraging the board to ban Sass permanently from the Kuskokwim 300 race. The race director for the Kuskokwim 300 confirms the race board of directors received the letter from Planned Parenthood and Sass later withdrew from that race.
Basile continued, “We want to stress that even in light of the credible accounts of sexual violence that have been shared with us, at no time have we made any judgement about Sass’s guilt or innocence, nor do we feel it’s our role to do so.
Emails, phone calls, and texts to Iditarod CEO Rob Urbach, asking if the organization got a letter from Planned Parenthood regarding similar allegations, have not been returned. In a third paragraph, Sass writes, “The Iditarod’s decision to try and get rid of the problem instead of facing it sets a terrible precedent and gives future false accusers the green light to throw out outrageous and false accusations about anyone they want to destroy. You are giving the accusers exactly what they are hoping for and in the end this hurts the actual victims of sexual abuse and the sport of mushing.
