Jennifer Johnston presents a budgeting simulator for residents to use.FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The March 11, Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce focused on balancing the state budget looking at issues such as the Permanent Fund Dividend , taxes and inevitably budget cuts., which is a non-partisan public policy forum focusing on issues in Alaska.
During her presentation, she spoke about various philosophies and methods for balancing the budget while maintaining or eliminating the PFD. Starting her presentation, she played a video highlighting the issues facing the state budget and PFD. Johnston then let those at the luncheon vote on one-of-four different PFD management plans.
Borough mayor candidate and former state legislator, Grier Hopkins was in attendance and spoke to the conclusions his table group reached. “Our table as a whole came up with a 75/25 dividend split,” said Hopkins. While they didn’t come up with specific cuts or taxes they would implement, they did agree that they wanted those funds to be focused on services for the people.
Other groups decided to implement a lottery or providing the University of Alaska System with more funds by cutting funds to the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game.
