On Saturday, March 30, Fairbanks resident Patrick Holland will celebrate the first of hopefully many anniversaries of his life-saving heart transplant operation in Seattle.

FastCast morning digital headlines for Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024.FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On Saturday, March 30,Holland’s determination to overcome setbacks — he waited on the transplant list for four months after an— received widespread media coverage and won over the hearts of thousands. In late March 2023, Holland, who lived with congestive heart failure, finally got the call he was waiting for.

He says he can now chase his 5-year-old son around the island in his kitchen without worrying about going into cardiac arrest.Holland says there are not enough words to express his gratitude to his donor. Hollands adds he is grateful for the family members of his donors. He says he knows they are hurting and mourning somewhere for the loss of their loved one. He wants them to know, that his heart is not being wasted.

“I’m going to go back to work for a company called that takes care of seniors with dementia,” he said. “I’m doing it now but I’m doing it on the side. It’s just taking care of people for no money but I’ve been given a gift and this guy likes what I do and so we work as a team.”
