Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians have contracted dengue fever since the start of the year, and now public health officials are preparing emergency measures, opening new hospitals and starting a mass vaccination campaign only days before crowds pack the streets to celebrate Carnival.

About 25,000 of those cases have been detected in Rio de Janeiro, where Carnival festivities are set to begin Feb. 14, with an estimated 100,000 people coming to the city per day during festivities, Brazil’s state-run news agencyopened 10 new care centers in Rio de Janeiro for dengue patients, and announced more preventative measures like cordoning off mosquito-infested properties and driving the insects away with smoke.

Outbreaks have been reported across the country, with the states of Minas Gerais, Acre, Goias and the capital city of Brasilia declaring states of emergency, theIn response to the outbreak, the Brazilian Health Ministry has begun rolling out a massive vaccination campaign using Qdenga, a dengue vaccine that has only begun winning regulatory approval in the past two years. Qdenga has been approved for use in the European Union, the U.K.
