The ALCS matchup between the two Texas foes elevated the rivalry to a new level.

Umpire Marvin Hudson tries to separate Texas Rangers right fielder Adolis Garcia and Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado after Garcia was hit by a pitch during the eighth inning in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Friday, Oct. 20, in Arlington. Here in the great State of Texas, our sports feuds have been left up to institutes of higher education, aided by proximity and a 60-year head start. For instance, you can bust up a dinner party simply by revealing your alma mater.

Given those parameters, you’d think the Spurs and Mavs could’ve worked up a grudge. Three conference semifinals or finals between 2001 and 2006 provided plenty of fodder. Still, nothing. Maybe it’s because we birthed San Antonio’s basketball team. Or maybe it’s the Alamo., which then contaminated the fan bases. The principals of the dispute: Martin Maldonado, who owes an everlasting debt to the curious loyalty of his manager, Dusty Baker; and one José Adolis García Arrieta.

Cutting to the chase, the ALCS seemingly turned on the Rangers’ loss at Globe Life Field in Game 5, the kind of defeat which, in local context, had a Game 6 feel to it. How could they win two games in Houston after losing like. They wanted Adolis to pay, too. They made their case so strongly at Minute Maid Park, you couldn’t hear Adolis’ introduction.
