Roald Dahl and the woke war is ridiculous - books are not sacred monuments ✒️ y_alibhai for ipaperviews

: “By today’s definition she was both racist and sexist and she was a complete snob who looked down on working-class people. But kids don’t think about all that, it sails over their heads.” That view is manifestly preposterous. Young people today are more fair-minded than any other previous generations. That was why, in March 2021, six of the globally popularIn playgrounds I’ve heard “fat” and “ugly” used as weapons to hurt and exclude fellow pupils.

People offended by these developments always accuse the woke of being too easily offended. Funny that. Many are nostalgic and want to hang on to lost childhoods and youth. I get that, being very old. But time moves, societies perpetually shift, our understanding of the world evolves, values are transformed. There can be no progress without that dynamism. Oldies who seek to trap their young and replicate the past need to grow up.

Bestselling children’s author Jacqueline Wilson believes modernising classic stories with sensitivity keeps them relevant: “I’m sure the same will happen with some of my earlier books as times change.” Most young parents today have an inclusive and woke mindset. Publishers are mindful of that market. An argument that was well made on Twitter by one Michael Walker, who: “The Roald Dahl controversy seems stupid. It’s not censorship, it’s a publisher recognising that people care about what values books imbue to their kids and so they’re modifying originals to make the reprints more sellable. It’s about sales not cancel culture.

Why Rewrites to Roald Dahl’s Books Are Stirring ControversyThe publisher of Dahl's books has removed language from the British author's works deemed racist and sexist. I know other people love RoaldDahl books, but I am uneasy with some of the language and stereotypes. Yet I believe it is better to leave the texts as they are so we don't make his image something it wasn't - he wasn't a sweet old man and he'd hate word theft like this, surely? Down the ol memory hole Why not publish two versions, one with original texts and the other with rewrites. Wouldn't that make everyone happy? No need to pursue political correctness on everything
