Elderly people ready to be sent home could be 'trapped' in hospital wards over Christmas during strikes by nurses and paramedics, a leading NHS official has warned.

Hospitals were told to send patients home before the weekend in a bid to limit crowds in overstuffed A&E departments.

He said: "We are working to ensure that if you have a serious injury, in particular a life-threatening injury, you can continue to rely on the ambulance service, and we would urge people in those circumstances to dial 999. Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, said: "Unless the Government indicates a willingness to negotiate on pay-related matters, further strike dates will be announced by the RCN for Jan 2023 and beyond.

This has been happening for years. Families dump granny on Xmas eve knowing social services shut down

Sadly some have been trapped for months prior to this. One of the problems that has been ongoing for a long time. No care in place for getting the folks home. The strikes can be stopped now by giving all staff a decent rise. Taxpayers are funding unaffordable expenses for MPs

This NHS official sounds like one of the Tory VIP's that have helped the Gvt destroy the NHS. This narrative is a weaponised tool to use against hard and honest workers in this country. That's not on!

They are already trapped in hospital...no care plans no care homes because care workers work for amazon

These tory charlatans are pulling out all the stops to demonise the nurses and ambulance workers. The Tories have no shame. They are a despicable shower of turds.

Call out the lack of action from social services! They seem to be absent in this discussion and are responsible for arranging care when leaving hospital. Hospitals are still discharging the elderly without checking there is anyone at home, food in and heating on.

There have been beds blocked for months because of lack of care in the community. Nothing to do with strikes. Another example of government trying to manipulate the electorate against one another.

Disgusting to blame this on nurses!!

Bollocks, it will have nothing to do with the strikes, this is just fear mongering.

All this already happen without the strikes, because our NHS is so horrendously overstretched, understaffed, and underfunded. I hope the strikes start to challenge that.

The ambulance service is a shite show at the best of times . Also the call handlers sound like parrots .

This has nothing to do with strikes, this an ongoing problem with the lack of social care funding, there is a distinct lack of step down beds in nursing and care homes, resulting in elderly people being left in hospital unnecessarily.

Their sons and daughters don’t careless , they want them dead anyway so they can inherit their wealth

And how many of you working people are sleeping with each other’s wives on Christmas?

The problem is lack of social care for those being discharged, not strikers.

Absolute bollocks, they are trapped in hospital mainly because there are not enough care workers or care packages to be able to send them home. Some people wait weeks/months on them. Discharge hubs/social workers not nurses are in charge of getting them home.

It’s has never been a religious Christmas because lots of people fornicate adultery drinking alcohol sleeping with each other’s wives all on day of Christmas, and family rows etc, what a disgrace all in the name of religion

It’s a threat , arrest the nhs

We don’t really need Christmas do we? We can do without Christmas celebration to avoid chaos rush accidents etc

Happens every year regardless of strikes. This isn’t news to us staff
