ONE particular meme that triggered me during the holiday season was that one referring to somebody taking offense at being greeted 'Merry Christmas .' It was about an article in the Washington Post entitled 'Please don't wish me 'Merry Christmas .'' The main beef of the author was that it is impolite and alienating to assume that everyone is Christian.Indeed, it is a fact that Christmas is a Christian-inspired holiday season.
But it is also a fact that the word itself, and the season that comes with it, have taken their own autonomous lives. Christmas is now celebrated even in countries that are not primarily Christian and by people who belong to other religions. The ethos of the celebration has become secularized and has now been associated with merriment and gift-giving.On the other hand, it is an important point to consider that we should also be mindful of religious sensibilities and that being greeted, even if innocently and without ill intent, using a word that has specific Christian roots may indeed be offensive and impolit
