As a mental health and addiction physician, I orient people towards recovery. But what can I do when the physical environment is making them unwell? I can diagnose distress and treat symptoms, but I cannot address the root causes. I cannot reduce air pollution or mitigate climate change disasters, but governments can. To keep my patients healthy, I need federal leaders to prioritize health as a key factor in environmental decision-making, and honour their commitments to reduce emissions.
Nate Charach shifted his traditional psychiatry practice to a group therapy model to help Canadian youths process their hopelessness and pain arising from climate grief and anxiety. He helps them to listen to those intense emotions, and to cope. Ultimately, though, he hopes they can learn that meaningful change is possible if our government also listens to the root causes of this crisis and take action.
