SYDNEY, N.S. — Drake Batherson hasn’t worn the Cape Breton Eagles jersey for more than five years but he hasn’t forgotten where his career began.“Cape Breton gave me the opportunity to be where I am today,” said Batherson in a media scrum on Oct. 1 prior to the Senators’ NHL pre-season game with the Florida Panthers at Centre 200.
At the time of his selection, Batherson was playing with the Valley Wildcats of the Nova Scotia Under-18 Major Hockey League where he had recorded 20 goals and 46 points in 34 games. In 2017-18, Batherson would play the first half of the season in an Eagles uniform, notching 17 goals and 39 points in 24 games and later represented Canada at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, N.Y., where he won a gold medal.
Since signing the contract, Batherson has continued his offensive production in the league. In 2021-22, he had 17 goals and 44 points in 46 games and followed that with 22 goals and 62 points in 82 games last season. “I tried to sign as many autographs as I could,” said Batherson, who had about 40 friends and family in attendance for the contest in Sydney.
