As the Senators prepare to face the Carolina Hurricanes in their season-opener on Wednesday at the PNC Arena, the club will be without second-line centre Josh Norris because his shoulder still is feeling the lingering effects of the second procedure he had on it last February.
Of course, the Senators won’t be putting a timeline on Norris’ return because they’re surprised he hasn’t played yet and this situation has caught them off guard. “He’ll come to me and I can’t ask him every single day,” Smith said. “Clearly, if he was unable to play the play would have been to put him on LTIR. I think we’re very hopeful that he’s going to play and play soon. Not putting Norris on LTIR comes with a price attached. He skated as the fourth-line winger in place of Zack MacEwen, who suffered an upper-body injury Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens. The rugged winger made the trip to Carolina, but there are no guarantees he’ll be available.
“There are guys there that love minutes and there are guys that can play lots,” Smith said. “We have a couple of days off between games so I can do a lot of things where guys can get minutes.” Smith and the coaching staff don’t love the fact they won’t have a full roster, but they can’t do anything about it either, so the best-case scenario is just to roll with it for the first game.
