The Ottawa Senators had to do some salary cap gymnastics, but had a little room to spare at the deadline for their final roster Monday at 5 p.m.
Based on practice Sunday if winger Zack MacEwen can’t play after taking a hit Saturday night then the Senators may dress only 19 players against the Hurricanes because they don’t have the cap space to call anyone up if Norris isn’t placed on LTIR. The hope is MacEwen will be fine. If Norris is ready soon that means president of hockey operations Steve Staios and Dorion will have to shuffle the roster to get Pinto, a restricted free agent, to fit under the cap once he does sign.
First, and foremost, Staois and Dorion want to have as many options available for Smith and the coaching staff as they can. This is the year the club is supposed to make the playoffs and starting the year without two of four centre’s pencilled into play won’t help achieve that goal. The best-case scenario is this will get done soon and everybody wears wide smiles when Pinto is back in Ottawa. These situations find a way to settle themselves and this one is complicated because of the club’s cap issues.Picked up by the Anaheim Ducks last Sunday when the Senators were trying to send Thomson, 23, a 2019 No. 19 overall pick, to Belleville, Ottawa had a chance to reclaim him when he was waived by his new team Saturday.
