A couple of days ago, Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk stared into the TV cameras at Canadian Tire Centre and said: “I’m done with camp. It was good, it was fun. But I’m absolutely done with it. Now we’re ready for the big games.”After falling six points short of qualifying for the playoffs a season ago, the Senators must take the next step. They need to play games beyond the finish of their regular season — April 16 vs. the Boston Bruins.
“The whole summer, you’re excited to get camp going and be with the guys again,” Claude Giroux said. “When you’re in camp and playing pre-season games, you can’t wait to get the season going. We had a good camp, we feel like we’re ready to go.”Asked if his team’s pre-season success means anything, Giroux said: “Not for me. It’s good, it builds confidence. But pre-season is about feeling the ice, feeling the puck, working on systems and doing that kind of stuff.
The Senators lineup features a cast of rising stars — a young group that includes Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson, Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson, Jakob Chychrun and Artem Zub, as well as long-time elite NHLer Giroux. It all starts Wednesday. The Hurricanes, who won 52 games last season, are expected to be one of the NHL’s top teams. Some are looking into a crystal ball and predicting they’ll win the Stanley Cup.
