As the Senators prepare to face the Carolina Hurricanes in their season-opener on Wednesday at the PNC Arena, the club will be without second-line centre Josh Norris because his shoulder still is feeling the lingering effects of the second procedure he had on it last February.
Nobody is convinced he’ll be out much longer and Norris shouldn’t be ruled out for Saturday’s home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers at 1 p.m. or Sunday’s visit by the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Canadian Tire Centre. Smith said he doesn’t speak with Norris every day because he doesn’t want to put any pressure on him to return either.
General manager Pierre Dorion has been studying every option to try to create space, including possible trade scenarios, and also to get Pinto under contract. The expectation is the Senators would bring back winger Jiri Smejkal in that scenario because he had an impressive camp and was sent down Sunday because of the cap issues with defenceman Maxence Guenette.
