The figures are based on a sample of 135 NSW non-government schools collated by education lending company EdStart and the most comprehensive analysis of fee data available | natassiazc

The cost of private schooling in Sydney’s northern suburbs has risen more than in other parts of the city this year, while fee hikes across the board have returned to pre-pandemic levels.

In the inner west, parents will be paying 3.69 per cent more for private schooling on average in 2022 and the median cost of tuition is $30,663. That included schools such as Newington College, MLC and PLC Sydney, where fees are above $34,000, and Rosebank College . In the north-west, parents are paying 2.6 per cent more on average and the median fee is $14,580. In the south, the average private school fee rose by 3.58 per cent and the median cost for year 12 is $19,872.Regional private schools in NSW were less expensive, with a median fee of $9793 and average increase of 2.57 per cent. The state’s overall median school fee was $12,950, up $1411 from last year.

But he still said the schools were being “quite restrained” in their increases: “I think that the days of schools pushing up fees by 5 and 6 per cent, which is what they used to do, are probably gone.” Mr O’Shannassy said fees of more than $30,000 a year were no barrier to enrolment for some families, but others would choose to seek out an academically well-regarded government school and invest in private tutoring instead.
