As counting continues after the WA election, two micro-parties are in line to win seats in the Upper House, despite winning only a fraction of the vote. Here's how.

"They rely on lots of preferences flowing exactly as the [group voting] tickets have been lodged, and if they don't all flow in that direction, both of them could get cut up in the count."

"The system herds people into the preference tickets arranged between the preference wranglers, between people nobody's ever seen or heard of," Mr Green said during the ABC's WA Votes broadcast on election night. He said it was "ridiculous" that in the South Metropolitan Region voters had to number — without making a single mistake — each candidate from one to 64, otherwise the vote would not count."Just get rid of it," he said.

Before that, micro-parties were able to achieve disproportionate success, notably when Ricky Muir from the Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party was elected to a powerful crossbench position with just 0.51 per cent of the Victorian vote.
