The peak body representing doctors supports the roadmap out of lockdown, but emphasises the need for authorities to monitor outbreak conditions closely and be prepared to step in so hospitals aren't overrun.

"AMA Victoria are very keen that the finger is very close to hovering over the pause button because nobody wants to go back to the hard lockdown."

More than 2,500 people being hospitalised with COVID-19 and more than 625 needing intensive care beds were used as markers of the health system's capacity limits. Dr McRae said it was important to remember that even when those targets were met, there would still be many unvaccinated people, including those who were vulnerable.

"When the emergency department can't admit a patient into the general ward, when the general ward can't escalate a patient into the intensive care unit, when the intensive care unit can't discharge a patient into the ward so the next intensive care patient can come in." She said people getting vaccinated, continuing to get tested even once they were fully vaccinated and adhering to other health measures could lead to a more optimistic outlook.

She said a key factor would be ensuring people continued to get tested if they were symptomatic, even if they had received the vaccine.

Can the AMA explain this to me why did my wife get a blood clot in her her leg after she received her first Pfizer jab.

The AMA has just given the regime in MAD MELBOURNE another excuse to prolong the lockdown insanity... yet they offer no treatment for the virus, just oxygen + vaccines which cannot help if you become sick. Well thats what the authorities want because there are NO beds available

Yep because those thousands of people who have had one shot of Pfizer cannot now been guaranteed to get the second one before NOVEMBER / DECEMBER !! Absurd

What a surprise the lockdown lovers coming to the fore

Do they say the same about NSW? Clearly they r the ones willing to let the virus run wild

No it does not. This roadmap is so cautious it is absurd.

If 'the science' proves that herd immunity and treatment turns out to be more effective long term will the Aus government drop all their vaccine supported regulations? Or are they too stubborn admit they were wrong and keep forcing unnessecary jabs?

if the AMA spent more time demanding governments fund health properly, and less time demanding people locked in homes because of lack of investment it would probably help. Lockdowns are clearly a cover for incompetent gov that has not invested in health properly nationwide

Wow. The stupidity continues. ABC not running country.

Organisation that only 30% of doctors are a member of needs to be reported on much less. Victoria’s reopening plans are extremely conservative. The idea they would overwhelm hospitals at high vaccination levels is laughable.

All those years of gutting the healthcare system by both the ALP and LNP and, condoned by the voters, is now biting us in the arse. Bloody well done, you all. Keep voting for these idiots.
