The amount of pork-free bacon, tofu-based sausages and other so-called"fake meats" on Australian supermarket shelves is booming, but new research has found eating these foods could pose significant health risks.
The study found some popular items sold in Australia supermarkets are laden with added salt, with 100 grams of meat-free bacon containing about 2g of salt — a third of a day's recommended intake. The foundation's chief executive Kellie-Ann Jolly said eating too much salt is linked to high blood pressure, which now affects more than six million Australians.Ms Farrand said the study's results were particularly problematic because often meat-free foods come with marketing about them being plant-based, gluten-free or vegan.
"We know when something says plant-based or low in something, we have the image in our heads that it's healthier for it because it's made from plants.
Why make a statement about how healthy meat substitutes are without providing a comparison to how healthy meat is? It’s a one dimensional study that seems to have biased rather than balanced findings. We want to know is a plant based burger healthier than a meat based burger?
meat is a safe needed product...eat meat! PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals!
The Nanny State followers should check this out.
I must admit I only know one vegan but her rationale is not really the health aspect but the concern about treatment of animals.
Well duhh.
You mean processed food is not as good as real food! Got it. Doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. If animals in a zoo they make an effort to replicate their natural diet from the wild. Pretty obvious we are supposed to eat fresh food, whether meat or vege is irrelevant.
'There are some products which contain a lot less salt than others, so there are healthier options out there.' Maybe 'healthier' but healthy? 🤔
Been vegan for 15 years. Love salt, processed vege sausages, highly-processed tofu products. Blood pressure 110/70, resting heart rate 57 bpm, smoke and drink occasionally and I'm 64. Your problem is?
Not eating meat does not make you a vegetarian, eating vegetables makes you a vegetarian, otherwise you are just a factory-crapatarian.
The title should read ' processed food is not as healthy ' . Thanks to all vegans for their contribution to animal welfare and the environment.
While burgers are hardly a health food I bet that a vegan burger is going to be way healthier for the consumer, the planet and the animals that share this planet with us.
I suffer low iron levels. I need the heme-iron of red meat. I also have an amine sensitivitu. I suspect this fake meat might be high in amines due to the high level of processing and flavouring. Don't know, I'll have to try it.
Curious about actual scientific findings instead of this nothing-burger article. Has salt and fat? How much? What kind of fat? How beneficial to the planet is one burger to the other? Talk to me.

Yeah probably not
