ANALYSIS: Smith and Australia retain the Ashes, but this isn't over yet

ABC Grandstand tweet: In case you missed it! Here's the magical moment @CricketAus retained the Ashes at Old Trafford. And an emotional @tdpaine36 couldn't be prouder. #Ashes19

It would be just as unsatisfying for the men this year if they conceded a late win to draw the series 2-2. Of course, that will be hard work for a battered team, one that hoped to channel the energy of its Headingley miracle but was ultimately sapped by Smith once more. Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer have a lot miles in their bowling legs, while James Anderson remains on the sick list.

This raises the prospect that Australia could just let Smith bat for as long as he likes in the fifth Test. With 671 runs in six hits in the series, imagine what he could do if he didn't have to factor in a declaration. The results could be obscene.
