A one-time Sydney floor trader with a gambling problem who would drink with clients over lunch and then rob banks in the afternoon has been jailed for his crimes, more than 40 years later | jennynoise

His signature move was to don a new hat and walk into the bank carrying a bag, show the teller a handwritten note saying there's a gun in his bag, and demanding cash – or else.Rhett Wyman

Approaching the teller, he said nothing, but handed her his withdrawal slip which read: "hold up gun in bag three hundred dollars".When she didn't notice the note, he asked her "did you read it?" and placed his zippered bag on the counter with the pistol showing. "I've got this", he said. "Do you know what I mean?"McCarty later told police he didn't bother with the water pistol after that first time.

It wasn't until the case for seven of the hold-ups were reopened in 2018 and a fingerprint analysis was carried out that McCarty was identified – due to fraud offences he was convicted of in 2010.On Friday, District Court Judge Sarah Huggett sentenced McCarty, 71, to a maximum three years and six months in prison, taking into account his guilty plea and the fact that he disclosed he'd committed an additional robbery – the only offence in which he was armed, albeit with a fake gun.
