Opinion: The two things we hear most about the Sydney Olympic Games are how great they were and why we couldn’t maintain that magical vibe. After 20 years, we are still in denial about the link between the two | Malcolm Knox

Another interpretation is that ‘our’ great Games spirit didn’t last because it was never ‘us’ that achieved it. The Games’ magic trick was to convince us that its success was somehow created not just by those who actually worked for it, but also the rest of us who jumped onto the world’s biggest bandwagon.

Then there was the army of paid and unpaid workers who did make it, truly, the best Games ever. We loved the volunteers, all those lovable ordinary Australians, so much that we forgot the essential division between them and us, which was that they were driving the bandwagon and we were just there for the ride. They seemed a flattering reflection of us, our best side on display even in those outfits. We gloried in their performance so much, many of us claimed their victory as ours.

We could pretend to have made sacrifices in cost and convenience, but nobody gives up more, against such long odds of success, than competitors and families and coaches and friends and supporters for sports that only get their big jamboree once every four years.
