States divided on compulsory testing of international travellers

State governments are divided on how to manage thousands of returned travellers refusing to undergo COVID-19 testing while in hotel quarantine.

Queensland Health says the state will begin mandatory testing of people in hotel quarantine when they arrive and again once they reach day 11 of their stay. Western Australia already requires all returned travellers to be tested for COVID-19. "You have powers to say to someone: 'Well, we won't let you out of quarantine until you've been tested and had a clear test'," Professor Murphy said.

"Most travellers, having made it back to Australia, won't be terribly keen to do another 10 days in quarantine," Mr Hazzard said. Australian Medical Association President Tony Bartone said that "in an ideal situation", returned travellers would agree to be tested as "their civic duty".Professor Murphy reiterated the importance of 14 days' quarantine for people arriving from overseas, noting the risk from people returning from overseas "is still very high" and "the country risk profile is changing all the time".

Yes indeed give non-consenting travellers an extra 2 weeks in hotel quarantine AND give them the bill!!😠

They should be tested before they leave and can only leave if it’s negative. What’s the use of quarantine if they can be asymptotic not be tested and go out an spread it.
