Former prime minister John Howard on the election campaign so far: Social media has made political discourse 'more tawdry.' MORE: Speers ausvotes

FULL INTERVIEW: Former prime minister John Howard says social media has exacerbated and encouraged ‘tawdry, vitriolic’ slogans. Speaking exclusively with Sky News, Mr Howard says everyone has a responsibility to curb ‘tawdry’ verbal excesses within political discourse.

The comments come after numerous MPs have had their posters defaced with slurs during the election campaign, and many candidates have been subjected to online abuse. Mr Howard also expects the upcoming election to be close, with voters open to change but feeling no ‘instinctive warmth’ towards Labor.
