The Liberal Party’s bitter feud with its biggest donor is threatening to reignite after Cormack Foundation directors allegedly overruled Liberal luminaries John Howard and Richard Alston to withhold money from the Victorian Liberal Party.
This follows the $2.5 million handout in 2018 for former Victorian Liberal leader Matthew Guy’s unsuccessful state election effort.Bianca De MarchiBut Victorian Liberal Party members claim the decision and the foundation’s refusal to fund the party’s administrative costs has left it about $1.7 million out of pocket, and runs counter to a peace deal brokered after a bitter legal battle last year.
At the meeting in April, a decision was made to halt donations to the Victorian branch once the federal election was over in a bid to let the fund grow in size. The sale of the Liberal Party’s headquarters at 104 Exhibition for almost $40 million in December has also bolstered the coffers.
