A bombshell leak of internal Chinese Communist Party documents has reignited scrutiny of what Beijing is doing to Muslim minority groups, especially Uighurs, in the western province of Xinjiang.
“It’s really about transforming the population,” says Darren Byler, an anthropologist specialising in Uighur culture. “At the end of the day, they want to assimilate the Uighurs. They want to break them.
