Mr Hastie was planning to travel to China in December alongside Liberal Party colleague James Paterson and Labor MP Matt Keogh for a study trip, but the Liberal politicians were informed on Friday their visa had been denied.

Both Mr Hastie and Senator Paterson have been critical of the Chinese government's human rights abuses against Uighurs in Xinjiang province, the unrest in Hong Kong and its alleged attempts to exert influence in Australia.

"The [Chinese government] want a one-way conversation. I believe very strongly in democracy, as does James, and we believe in the exchange of ideas and that was what the whole trip was about - so they need to come to the party, too." On Saturday, A Chinese Embassy spokesperson said the country would not"yield to colonisation of ideas and values" and called on the Liberal politicians to"genuinely repent and redress their mistakes".

Earlier this year, Mr Hastie, who is the chair of federal parliament's security and intelligence committee, came under fire for likening the global response to China's rise in power to the

The Maoist Chinese government is the raising Hitler of this Century. People don't realize yet that we are in worse position than in 1939. China is not only waging their military and nuclear capabilities but it is also going around the world bribing politicians and bureaucrats

Beijing is a bully and has a huge list to repent.

To ask for “repentance” is the blatant extension of the Chinese style “re-edication” for Australians.

The Chinese want him to lose face and kowtow to them. nothing has changed in China for a few thousand years, the imperial rule is still in place. Meanwhile....

Seriously! Does Hastie actually think that China cares!! You provided China a convenient opportunity to rebuke Arsetralia with China full in the knowledge that you would continue to play the clown! 🙄🙄🙄

Same here Hastie - sincerity on bended knee, neck bare is no humanity, just sheer controlling viperous hate - since Boogarragarra - never ceded.

paintsandsings The warrior & the weakling. What rank hypocrisy. First Nations People? Asylum Seekers. Timor Leste. Child sex victims. Domestic violence. Human Rights concerns. Give me a break.

O YES YOU WILL

Seriously, why would these two muppets want to visit such a vile place as China anyway? They already know everything, so a 'study tour' is highly suspect. Best that these two stay home to continue preaching to the converted. Please sir, some more.

Where is Scott Morrison? Apart from dispensing a Fake Hug or two a week ago, the 🔥 🔥 🔥 and the cause thereof obviously got too hot for him and he fled across the country for more photos.

Hastie didn't say anything which wasn't true. China's idea of repentance is wrong, silence doesn't lead to positive ends. Xinjiang is East Turkestan, an area with strong beliefs & independence movement since China's invasion of the region. Reeducation won't help, autonomy will.

China have as much chance of getting an apology as they have of getting a love bite off the pope, or Gladys lu agreeing she interfered in the election process

sacarlin48 Maybe he will 'hand' it to them?

If you were ever looking for poster children for the alt right .. those two certainly have the faces for it.

Unlike Labor politicians, good to see the Libs have balls 👍

Srsly who cares 🙄

Oh Andrew Official_Hastie China doesn’t care chump

Good.

Hastie is on the right side of the argument here. He’s also exposing how in the pocket the ALP are in with China, given their silence

repent my arse ....

I’m surprised there’s a Chinese word meaning ‘repent’

We have two alternatives, here. Either these two were totally clueless that their 'criticism' of China would create problems, or this is a deceased and foul-smelling feline dropped to distract from something even more putrid. Morrison running away and buggering off, perhaps?

davidbewart Idiot

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I’m not sure about China’s policy of diplomatic political visits but I’m sure they vet you before coming to speak publicly in their country. As long as Australia doesn’t have to be subservient to China we should have good dialogue to continue our relationships.

While I don’t agree with a lot of things Andrew Hastings says I agree with his stance on apologising. I think the Chinese government is wrong for not granting him a visa.

This is the result of auspol so weak against CCP for that long. More to come, mate if you won’t stand up for yourself.

Haha🤣. Repent ?

Beijing’s totalitarianism is spreading to AU, their evil suppression on human rights are the truth, so disgusting to see suppressing ppl’s freedom of speech abroad.

This whole saga was a deliberate stunt by these two.

Another knocked of his perch and his ego taking a bashing.

Any apology would only ever be a not-pology anyway.

Oh No! China's going to be so distraught. What is China going to do if that single person can't visit? 1.5 billion people are going to cry to sleep for a week. (Sarcastically) why is the douche such a little girl that wont make an small apology?

Andrew and James look like a spankingly awesome couple. Can they find another destination for their tax-payer funded love-in? ❤️ 🎩💍🎩 loveislove 🏳️‍🌈

The sooner this dodgy fool is out of parliament the better!

Oh I bet that has scared the Chinese. For them he’s just another wanker who won’t get a visa. auspol

All this really suggests to me is that Australian politicians have LONG turned their head to the atrocities in plain sight of China. No more appeasement. Time to bloody stand up for decency and lord knows its a damning fact if it starts with a Liberal MP first.

Oh no, he cant go to china...he must be devastated

Being a MP in Australia doesn't give you automatic entry to any foreign country. You didn't know that?

Andrew Hastie needs to go to Ideologies 101 lessons if he wants to be a politician. The blue squiggley area is his position...right in the middle of Hitlers ideology

Never apologise and continue to call them out on their bullshit

Liberals don’t repent either ..it’s a DNA thing

What a skilled diplomat Hastie is !! He’ll go far !! Err.. no he won’t be going anywhere !! How good is liberal diplomacy!!

I can’t stand him but also fuckchina

Home truths are badly timed should you want to visit.

Liberal MP shocked, confused and angry when he finds out his “born to rule-iness” doesn’t extend beyond the borders of Australia 😂
