In the battle for eyeballs on social media, independent Queensland Senator Fraser Anning has left most leaders of Australia's major parties in his wake.

Sri Lanka, Christchurch comments drove spike in followers

Senator Anning saw his highest interaction rate on April 22, when he tweeted his claim that if Muslims immigrated to Australia there would be an increase in terrorist attacks, and said Islam was a"threat to our nation", following the Sri Lanka killings. The result demonstrates how Facebook's algorithms — which dictate what people see in their feeds — reward and amplify messages which incite strong reactions.

However, he said, a handful of high-profile independents including Zali Steggall, Rob Oakeshott and Kerryn Phelps were responsible for the lion's share of these engagements, but this was also the case with high-profile independents in the 2016 election. Based on data covering April 22 to May 14, the Liberal Party had 97 per cent mentions of candidates' accounts, while only 3 per cent retweets. The Greens had the highest retweet rate of 24 per cent, followed by independent candidates at 21 per cent.

"I think overall I think this indicates the mood of the electorate in 2016 and 2019, there was a considerable challenge to the government that may show in the fact that people weren't really willing to retweet its messages.

The chart supports the claim that Twitter skews heavily left...

Yes, the sneering elitism of mainstream politicians is not as all-encompassing when everyone gets a say. Perhaps if the ABC & other media groups didnt try to ignore the parts of the electorate that are not represented by the big 3 parties he would not have had to enter politics

Certainly anning would get the most abuse. And it is a highly competitive field.

VOTE LABOR

Fringe dwellers that nobody really likes ABC? You just cant help youselves, always marginalizing those with views and opinions opposite that of the radical left. Lazy, biased propaganda outlet.

You do realise that a lot of his 'supporters' are people from other countries?

I think you might be surprised as to how much the talking points of Hanson and Anning resonate with mainstream voters. More people might be 'liking' or retweeting their posts a lot more if they weren't afraid for their jobs.
