The Northern Territory’s Health Minister has been forced to take back comments made by Chief Minister Michael Gunner suggesting hard borders would be enforced across the territory.

There are currently no hard borders restrictions enforced by the Northern Territory government which has instead implemented a hotspot strategy requiring only visitors from Victoria and parts of NSW to quarantine upon entrance to the territory. Northern Territory Health Minister Natasha Fyles held a news conference on Tuesday morning to clarify the government’s position.

“If you come from a hotspot you go to forced quarantine, if you don’t come from a hotspot, you’re free to enter the Northern Territory”. “Nothing has changed overnight,” she said. The Labor party’s political opponents criticised Mr Gunner’s comments, suggesting the Chief Minister has created mass confusion with his attempts to politicise the coronavirus.
