Victoria’s Mental Health Minister Martin Foley has unveiled a $60 million boost to mental health funding in response to an alarming increase in demand on the state’s health services. In the year to June, the number of people seeking crisis support in emergency departments rose by more than 23 per cent. Emergency presentations for mental health incidents also rose by more than 33 per cent in people under the age of 18.
Mr Foley said authorities were aware heading into the coronavirus pandemic that “our mental health system wasn’t fit for purpose”. Premier Daniel Andrews reiterated his support for struggling Victorians in the fight against the virus, saying “we want to stand with every Victorian who needs care and support”. Meanwhile the state’s Health Minister Jenny Mikakos issued a strong apology for any possible gaps in the health response to the pandemic despite putting in “every ounce of energy”.
