Victoria's mental health system 'wasn't fit for purpose' heading into the coronavirus crisis, the state's Health Minister admits, as an Australian Of The Year mental health advocate warns young people in particular are 'looking down the barrel'.

Statistics from Lifeline also show people across the country are struggling with their mental health, with the hotline receiving 25 per cent more calls than this time last year — the equivalent of one call every 30 seconds., Patrick McGorry AO, executive director of Orygen and professor of youth mental health at the University of Melbourne, told the ABC the pandemic had wrought a "very major effect on the mental health of everybody".

Professor McGorry said clinicians did not want people with mental health issues presenting at emergency departments, but that was "the only way they can get help at the moment". "That is the worst place for people to be seeking help because it is not set up as mental health care, it is set up for completely different types of problems," he said."Education disruption, educational failure, the state of universities, the fact youth unemployment is already double adult unemployment — all of these factors are combining to create a perfect storm for the mental health and futures of young people.

Professor McGorry said despite the coronavirus crisis he was confident the community would "get through this". "People have just got to take one day at a time and try to get through the next few weeks and then I think it will be a much better period ahead," he said.Stay up-to-date on the coronavirus outbreak

Get us all a vaccine for depression - the real killer of 2020

the main route cause of mental health -alcohol, drugs, promiscuity and broken family. the so-called government and medical expert don't talk of that..fix that first...prevention better than cure..divert money to fix that.

Completely a 'self inflicted', mental health crisis due to DicDan's destructive crude lockdown and media constant fear mongering about COVID19! It's a bloody disgrace!

It is a shame GP's weren't included as part of this package. They have long term care of people physically and mentally but are ignored by governments as part of the medical workforce.

Just another way to siphon off public money via not for profit organisations.

When is it that people will understand that the consequences of this madness are far greater than the virus itself? Especially that the government has failed people at risk?

It all could have been avoided, yet FakeNewsMedia like you created a panic where there was none!

I'm sure this was entirely altruistic and had no political ass covering motive at all involving suicide rates going through the roof as a result of Vic lockdown rules... It's okay if thousands kill themselves, as long as we don't let the virus win! Right?

In all likelihood the pozzed psychologists the Andrews government rolls out will further damage the mental health of anyone that sees them.

The government lives with mental illness and implements mental illness so to have effect bring down the government
