Commercial muttonbirding is restricted to Tasmania's Indigenous community, but a new exhibition explores the origin of the hunting practise.

"He would be 85 and marches for kilometres around Bridport and says it's the mutton bird [short-tailed shearwater] oil that keeps him fit."

The artist's body of work — I Shed My Skin, A Furneaux Islands Story — in collaboration with poet Pete Hay, details her family's origins off the north eastern tip of Tasmania. As well as being a family of farmers, mechanics and more on the larger Flinders Island, the Willis family were pioneers in commercial muttonbirding on Great Dog — also known as Big Dog — Island.

"The mutton bird industry is integral to their story because they were key figures in the beginning of that commercial enterprise on [Big] Dog Island," Giblin explained."He was a foundling in Launceston and was adopted out to an English couple called the Smallfields. "They had obtained some land — in fact, Puncheon Island — just to the north east of Cape Barren Island."The Willis family, along with a few other families, established the commercial birding industry on Big Dog Island and began harvesting the meat stomach oil and feathers.
