BREAKING: Michael McCormack will remain as National Party leader and deputy prime minister after defeating Barnaby Joyce in a partyroom vote. 9News

"I've been endorsed as leader," Mr McCormack said.

"I was endorsed as leader when we came back here after the May election last year, I was endorsed as leader when he stood down in 2018. "That's three times in less than two years. I think that is enough to warrant me leading the party going forward." The deputy leader position, vacant after Senator Bridget McKenzie's resignation, was won by frontbencher David Littleproud."I joined this great party 22 years ago in my electorate, the little town of Stanthorpe."This is about hope, this is about vision for our people in regional and rural Australia."The shenanigans are over, it's time to get back to looking after those people that are facing drought, that have faced up to the fires.

Senator Matt Canavan, who resigned from Cabinet to back Mr Joyce in the spill, will not return to the frontbench.Mr Joyce resigned as deputy prime minister and the Nationals leader in 2018 after revelations surfaced of his affair with former media adviser Vikki Campion.
