Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce will stand for the Nationals leadership when the party meets tomorrow in Canberra. The meeting was originally scheduled to fill the role of deputy leader, which is vacant due to Senator Bridget McKenzie’s resignation after she was found to have breached ministerial standards.
Mr Joyce told Sky News it’s important the Nationals are not in the “shadow” of the Liberal party. He refused to say if he had the numbers to win, but vowed if he were leader he would stand up for the "invisible" Australians in rural and regional areas. "You can't just sit back and say you wish things were better," he said.
