Job vacancies have suffered their biggest collapse in history, easily eclipsing the previous record drop, recorded during the 90s recession.

Job vacancies have suffered their biggest collapse in history with new figures revealing huge falls in the number of people working in key industries over the past three months.

Employment increased 24 per cent in the electricity, gas, water and waste services sector, but there was not an increase in hours worked. The ABS attributed this to a change in working arrangements. Asia-Pacific economist with Indeed, Callam Pickering, said given the real unemployment rate was above 11 per cent, there was around 12 people for every job vacancy in the country.
