Prime Minister Scott Morrison has staunchly defended the level of funding provided to the ABC, insisting the government has not cut its budget and backing the national broadcaster's efforts to be more focused on regional and suburban Australia., including 250 job losses and the end of the 7.45am radio news bulletin, in a bid to save $40 million. The measures triggered a wave of criticism about the funding squeeze imposed on the broadcaster by the Coalition in recent federal budgets.
Mr Morrison said any journalist in Australia would want to work at the ABC because its budget was more secure than commercial outlets which have seen their revenue battered by major declines in advertising sales. Mr Morrison praised the push for ABC staff to "get their heads out of Ultimo" and have a more regional and suburban focus.
