The NT Electoral Commissioner is warning a record low voter turnout in remote Indigenous communities this NT election is not a good sign for democracy in the Territory.

Record low voter turn-outs in Indigenous communities are revealing a growing divide between urban and remote residents, the Northern Territory Electoral Commissioner says.In one remote community 24 per cent of voters have taken part in the NT electionWith just one day left of remote voting, commissioner Iain Loganathan said the poor turn out rate — sitting at about 50 per cent in several communities — was unlikely to change.

The commissioner said only 24 per cent of the 1,529 enrolled residents at Maningrida voted despite the community's allocated polling days being extended from one day to two.Mr Loganathan said many people had already travelled away from the community for funeral ceremonies. He said residents living in urban areas had their details updated automatically through the Australian Electoral Commission's direct enrolment system.

"What we do know is that many Aboriginal Territorians are not on the electoral roll, and many of those who are don't vote."

The way it works is that every person gets one vote.

That's funny because nonaboriginals who live in remote areas have no problem.

Love heading to the comments to see who all the gutless racists are.

They have voting rights like every Australian.

Because of their choices. They are the ones deciding not to vote. They have 1 vote per person just like everyone else in the community but they are deciding themselves not to make that vote.

In a Democracy (sic) like ours does it really matter. Choices are limited and none have any integrity or morals, just after the power that comes with the role.
