The Country Liberal Party (CLP) and Labor Party have traded barbs over the controversial topic of government spending in the Northern Territory.

The Country Liberal Party and Labor Party have traded barbs over the controversial topic of government spending in the Northern Territory. Total debt in the territory has increased from $1.8 billion to $8.2 billion since the Labor government was elected in 2016. With the election set to be held on August 22, the Labor Chief Minister and Treasurer have asked what the CLP plan to cut to bring the budget back into the black.

“What are they going to cut, sack and sell?” Labor Treasurer Nicole Manison asked. Northern Territory CLP Leader Lia Finocchiaro hit back saying Ms Manison “was the worst performing Treasurer the Northern Territory has ever seen”. Mr Gunner said he had “thrown the kitchen sink” in a bid to save 7,000 jobs in a joint territory-federal effort and was prepared to “throw the kitchen sink again” if necessary.
