A 63-year-old ex-shearer saves $80,000 over two years to fund his retirement by taking part in South Australia's recycling scheme. But the way he's gone about it is illegal.

Over the past two years, 63-year-old ex-shearer Larry has put aside $80,000 for his retirement by taking part in South Australia's recycling scheme.Under SA law, a person seeking refunds on bottles sold outside that state can be fined up to $30,000

But Larry has been collecting bottles and cans in Victoria for the past two years and getting refunds over the border in South AustraliaHe works seven days a week, visiting sporting clubs to collect beverage containers that he then transports to one of the state's depots, where he is paid 10 cents per can and bottle.Under South Australian law, a person can be fined up to $30,000 for seeking refunds on beverage containers sold outside of that state.

The sports clubs love it. They save huge amounts of money in waste disposal, and are only too happy to give Larry a copy of the key to their skip bin.

Glad he does not take them into NSW : the waiting time to queue up to use the hard-to-find NSW automated machines is long enough; without people with truck loads of cans and bottles commandeering the machines.

Good on him

'But Larry's exploits are illegal, purely because he lives in Victoria' Contradicted by story itself. And Constitution. (The law forbids importing, claiming $ on bottles not sold in SA. As deposit not paid there. Wouldn't matter if Larry lived in Bordertown and harvested in Vic)

Good work!

Any chance he also burned a log cabin down?

Check the article out. Victoria are going to implement the same or similar “new” policy regarding recycling deposits. Heads up it use to be a policy in Victoria. 70’s 80’s
