Hundreds of protesters, almost all masked, staged an unsanctioned march through a popular shopping district in Hong Kong - just a day after the city's leader outlawed face coverings.

Pro-democracy protesters marched through Hong Kong in defiance of a ban on face masks as much of the city ground to a halt on Saturday with the subway suspended and swathes of shops and malls shuttered following another night of violence.

Anti-government protesters set up a barricade during a rally after the government invoked an emergency powers to ban masks at demonstrations. As the crowds were marching on Saturday, city leader Carrie Lam released a stony-faced video statement in which she condemned protesters for"a very dark night".

The rallies were ignited by a now-scrapped plan to allow extraditions to the mainland, which fuelled fears of an erosion of liberties promised under the"one country, two systems" model China uses for the finance hub. On Friday, Lam used a colonial-era law to ban face masks at protests, but it did little to clam tensions."The government doesn't listen to us. So we are upping our game," said 32-year-old protester Nathalie, as hardcore demonstrators trashed a station in the previously calm neighbourhood of Tseung Kwan O.

Shopping malls were closed, supermarket chains said they would not open and many mainland Chinese banks stayed shuttered, their facades sprayed with graffiti.

Com'on, you honestly think a mask ban is going to work? HongKongProtesters

What about cosmetics? Perhaps some people may instead of wearing a mask, apply make-up to their face in such a manner as to make facial recognition difficult. So where is the line? Isn't the application of any costemic product a form of mask?

Not protestors. NED/cia coup puppets. Tell the truth.

The emergency law invoked by the Hong Kong govt could be used arbitrarily to impose whatever measures detrimental to the human rights and freedom of HK people. This is extremely worrying if the world lets the HK govt to act in this direction. HongKongProtests EmergencyLaw This emergency law enables the chief executive to bypass the normal legislative process. This could be just a starter. More draconian bans in the name of law could be lurking around the corner. There is no room for HongKongers to compromise but continue to fight for democracy. bernice______ Before blaming the protesters for violence, please first understand why this happened.
