Hong Kong’s train system remained shut on Saturday, and shopping malls, supermarkets and banks closed, after chaotic scenes saw a teenager shot and a policeman set on fire on Friday night.

In the town of Yuen Long, a 14-year-old was shot by a bullet, believed to have been fired by a police officer. He underwent surgery at Tuen Mun hospital and was in a serious condition. Riot police remained stationed at the hospital on Saturday.A police spokeswoman, Yolanda Yu, said she believed the shooting was related to an attack on police at Yuen Long but this wasn’t confirmed.

When a protester grabbed the gun from the ground the officer grabbed it back. Another petrol bomb was thrown at his feet before more police in vans arrived.The Hospital Authority said 31 people were injured on Friday night and three were in a serious condition. A petrol bomb was thrown at a train at Sha Tin, and fires lit outside four Mass Transit Railway stations.

Charles Mok, the Legislative Councillor representing the technology sector in Hong Kong’s parliament, warned the use of emergency powers could lead to a crackdown on internet services. Schools were told to issue a letter to parents on Friday that said students shouldn’t wear face masks at school or outside school and school wasn’t a place for political views.
